Listen to Dr Wyatt Woodsmall talk about our current dis-education system and how our children are being told 'the great lie'. As our education system focusses on cramming content into young minds, extensive research shows that it's those with emotional intelligence who really succeed. However, what is success? Is success something that is subjective and very personal to each individual? Wyatt talks about wisdom and I absolutely agree. However, to say that we need no education is rubbish. It's how we educate that needs looking at. One education system does not fit all. Wyatt talks about the educational institution as being a punishment and I think for some it does seem that way. Our educational system needs to recognise the value of emotional intelligence and our teachers need to be adaptable in how they teach our kids and what they teach them. Academic success is one area of success - it's not the be all and end all and it is still a success factor for many people. However, there are many other forms of success: making friends, having a family, having a job, running a business, making money, dedicating your life to a cause - the list is endless because success very much depends on your own view of success.
Wyatt was the first person to ever be authorised to train people in NLP and has an amazing mind. There are some very interesting research facts in his talk and it's well worth listening to. The philosophy of 'failing to teach' (if the student hasn't learned, the teacher hasn't taught) is great. Everyone has the capability to learn - we need to take responsibility to find out how each child learns and to teach in a way that meets those needs. Positive discipline is much more effective and doesn't damage the belief system of the young impressionable mind.
This is a really thought provoking talk and well worth watching. Let me know what your thoughts are on this.
